Police Chase After 'Yahoo Boys' in Osogbo, Cause Panic Among Residents

Residents of Famson area of Osogbo,in Olorunda local government area of Osun state were Thursday evening thrown into state of panic, when some police officers invaded the areas, shooting sporadically into the air.

The policemen numbering 4 said to be pursuing two suspected internet fraudsters popularly called "Yahoo boys" chased the suspects who ran into Famson street from another end, in efforts to escape.

TIME NEWSNG gathered that the activities of the 4 police officers resulted into chaos in the streets as shop owners, residents as well as those passing through the area at the time were affected by the tear gas shot into the air by the police.

An eye witness prince Adewale Olayemi while narrating his experience said it was the "crudest policing method" he's had to witnessed in a while"

According to him, one of the boys being chased by the officers almost got knocked down by an unsuspecting vehicle while trying to get away.

He described as 'disturbing' the conduct and activities of the policemen.

He said "I witnessed a very disturbing scenario at Famson Street, Osogbo around 6pm today.           Four policemen were pursuing two young boys who were said to be "Yahoo boys".

 They were shooting in the air when they were about crossing to the other side of the road and eventually busted into Famson street where shop owners and innocent citizens were almost suffocated with tear gas".

 "One of the boys nearly got knocked down by a fast moving vehicle while trying to escape. For me, this is the crudest policing method I have witnessed in a long time".

He stated further " I was reliably informed now that it is the usual practice by policemen when they are broke and needed money.

"The extortion racket I was told after collecting money from the boys at times follow them to ATM to withdraw money for them"

This alleged conduct of the policemen is becoming a trend of sort, if the trajectory of similar happenings in the state is anything to go by.

Message put across to the police public relations Officer in the state, DSP Folashade Odoro on the development has not been replied as at  publication time.

Recall that two students of the University of Osun state were sometimes this year allegedly shot by some policemen who alleged them of engaging in internet fraud.

Also, few months back, an middle aged manwas reported to have lost his life when he was knocked off his motorcycle by some suspected Yahoo boys who were being chased by policemen.
