Alake, Abayomi, others demand return of parliamentary system
The Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, the
former Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr Kole Abayomi, SAN among other prominent Nigerians have called for the return of parliamentary system of government in Nigeria.
The made the call at the public lecture titled, "Federalism: Myth or Reality, The Nigerian Experience", organised by the Yoruba Tennis Club in Lagos.
Oba Gbadebo who was responding to the lecture delivered by Dr Abayomi, SAN said the parliamentary system of government remains the best for Nigeria because it is easier to run than the current presidential system and cost-effective.
"Federalism is like human five fingers. The fingers can never be equal and with fiscal federalism in place every state would develop at their pace and use their resources to fund themselves.
"It is a pity that military took us out of the parliamentary that is better and cheaper. The question now is: who will bell the cat? But we will continue to discuss it," Alake said.
Earlier, Dr Abayomi who was the Guest Speaker said despite being among those who championed the introduction of presidential system of government in Nigeria, he has come to realise it's costliness and imperfections.
"Having being part of those who recommended Presidential system for
Nigeria, I want to say that I am fed up with it," Dr Abayomi said.
According to the Guest Speaker, what needed to be done is the return of parliamentary system as it is becoming clearer that Nigeria may not be able to sustain the current governance structure in future. He also suggested the need to respect equality of every citizens and local control of resources.
The Chairman, Yoruba Tennis Club, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamiwo said as a
foremost pan-Nigeria social entity, the club considers the topicality of the issue under discourse and thought of contributing it's quota to it.
