HERDSMEN CRISIS: CATTLE WREAK HAVOC IN OSUN RICE FARM
Rice crops valued at
millions of naira have been lost to ravaging herds of cattle in songbe area of
Ola Oluwa local government area of Osun state.
The loss and subsequent
threat of herdsmen to the people of the village have forced operatives of Nigeria
security and civil defence corp to move into the village.
This has led to the arrest
of two suspected herdsmen.
It is a sad day for Bola Fasade,
the owner of these hectares of farmland in Songbe, a farm settlement in Osun
state.
The hope of harvesting and
profiting from the rice farm was dashed by herds of cattle who ate up all the
farm produce
This spurned civil defence personnel to visit
the settlement and effect arrests
The farm owner Bola Fashade
could not hide her tears as she recounts her ordeal i the hands of these herdsmen
and their cattle. a situation which she said has put her into debt running into
millions of naira due to the total damage done on her rice farm by the cattle.
Two suspects have since been
arrested in connection to the crime. but these security officials also have a
note of advise for host communities to check and get clearance from their communities
heads or traditional rulers before
accommodating herdsmen.
While the government
strongly promotes agriculture, scenarios like this may deter people from
investing heavily in large scale farming
