Adeleke Died Of Drugs Overdose Administered By Unqualified Personnel, Not Poison - Coroner

The coroner overseeing the inquest into the death of Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara has given his verdict, after three weeks of sitting.

Chief Magistrate Ayilara in his verdict held that the deceased from all evidences gathered during the investigation died of drugs overdose administered on him by his nurse of about 20 years, Alfred Aderibigbe.

Magistrate Ayilara also held that the former governor did not die of poison as being widely speculated, but of aspiration of gastric content as a result of depression of central nervous system with blunting of gas reflex caused by overdose of sedatives and analgesics.

He stated further that the testimonies given by the nurse at the coroner on oath contradicted his statement at the police, which indicated that the nurse was being economical with the truth.

The coroner recommended that the office of the Director of Public prosecution look into the case file of Nurse Aderibigbe with a view to determining the appropriate charges to be filed against him, if any.
He also recommended that the qualification of Aderibigbe be further investigated to ascertain if he is truly qualified as claimed.

Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, the first civilian governor of Osun state, died on the 23rd of April 2017.

His death sparked controversy and riot in the state, spurring the state government to set up as coroner inquest to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death.
