Peace has finally returned to the city of Osogbo, the Osun state capital after a violent protest embarked upon by students of the Osun state university over the alleged ritual killing of their colleague.
Timilehin Shonibare, a 400lv Microbiology student whose decomposing body was discovered by the police, after his suspected killers were arrested, was declared missing last week.
The students in their numbers had taken over the major streets in the town, setting bonfires at every strategic junction.
The visibly angry students who attacked anyone they came across during the protest which started from their school campus to the palace of the ataoja of Osogbo and ended at the state Secretariat were armed with various harmful objects.
The protest which paralyzed commercial and vehicular activites in the town for several hours, was later brought to a halt with the intervention of the police led by their commissioner, Fimihan Adeoye.
Adeoye in an interview assured that everything is under control, with an assurance that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
The students as at press time have been dispersed by the police and have returned to their campus.
Meanwhile, the Osun state government has condemned in strong terms the gruesome killing of the final year student of the state university Timilehin Shonibare, by some suspected ritualists.
The state government in a statement signed by the commissioner for information and Strategy, Lani Baderinwa described as wicked, evil and callous the killing of the student.
While commiserating with the deceased family, his colleagues and the entire Uniosun community, the state government appealed to the students to remain calm and mourn their late colleague in peace.
The statement further stated that the state government is saddened by the incident, but satisfied that the police have arrested the suspected killers.
